What is PEKiP?

More than a baby class – a concept for life.

The Prague Parent-Child Programme (PEKiP) has been established since 1973 and is one of the most thoroughly researched concepts for group work with parents and babies in their first year. Developed in Prague, now practised worldwide – and aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

At the heart of the concept: playful, age-appropriate movement and sensory activities in a comfortably warm room. Babies move freely without clothing – supporting motor development, early childhood sensory development and natural infant growth without equipment or pressure.

For parents, PEKiP provides exactly what's missing in the first months: genuine exchange with others at the same stage, guided with empathy, awareness and expertise by a certified PEKiP instructor.

What you take away

75 minutes well spent.

Free Movement & Sensory Play

Babies play unclothed in a warm room. This encourages motor development, body awareness and sensory experience right from the start.

First Social Connections

Your baby meets peers and has their first group experiences. A wonderful experience for babies – and for parents too.

Strengthening the Parent–Child Bond

75 minutes of undivided attention for your child – away from household chores and daily routine. Quality time that truly counts.

Parent Exchange & Support

Real conversations with other parents at the same stage of life. No social media comparisons – genuine community.

Weekly Rhythm

Regular routines give babies security and structure. Your group meets every week at the same time.

A Proven Concept

PEKiP has been scientifically supported for decades and is one of the most successful parent-child programmes worldwide.

What to expect

A typical PEKiP session.

75 minutes with structure and space – for your baby and for you.

Arrival

A shared settling-in circle – no stress, no time pressure. The room is warm and the atmosphere relaxed.

02

Movement & Senses

Age-appropriate movement and sensory activities: materials, games and prompts that encourage your baby's motor skills, perception and curiosity.

03

Parent Exchange

While babies explore, there's space for real conversation: sleep, development, everyday life with a baby – from parents for parents, guided by the instructor.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

When can I start PEKiP classes with my baby?

You can join from your baby's 6th week of life. The course then accompanies you through your baby's entire first year.

How long does a PEKiP session last?

Each session lasts 75 minutes. The group meets weekly so you can build a steady rhythm together.

How many families are in a group?

A maximum of 8 families per group – keeping the atmosphere personal and giving every child plenty of space.

Where do the classes take place?

Classes are held at Planke39, Baakenallee 39, 20457 Hamburg – right in the HafenCity neighbourhood, just a few minutes' walk from S/U-Bahn Elbbrücken and U-Bahn HafenCity Universität.

What do I need to bring?

Just a wool blanket or mat for your baby. The room is kept comfortably warm so babies can play unclothed – this is a central element of PEKiP.

What makes PEKiP different from other baby classes?

PEKiP is one of the most thoroughly researched concepts for group work with babies in their first year. The focus is on free movement, sensory development and building genuine social connections – for babies and parents alike.

What happens in a typical PEKiP session?

Each session begins with a shared arrival circle – no rush, no pressure. Then come age-appropriate movement and sensory activities for the babies: materials, games and impulses that encourage motor development, perception and curiosity. Meanwhile, there's space for parents to talk – about sleep, development, everyday life with a baby. The session ends with a gentle, shared close.

How long has PEKiP existed?

The Prague Parent-Child Programme was developed in Prague in the early 1970s and has been established since 1973. It is one of the longest-running and most scientifically supported early childhood development concepts in the world – and continues to be developed to this day.

Is PEKiP suitable for premature babies or children with additional needs?

PEKiP is an inclusive concept that orients itself to each child's individual developmental stage – not fixed age norms. If you have questions about prematurity or additional needs, please get in touch with Julia directly so we can find the best way to get you started.
